How the Knee Works
The knee is a joint that connects the bones of the lower and upper leg. Knee movement operates similar to a hinge, making it possible to walk, sit, jump or squat. The knee is the largest joint in the body, and its structure consists of multiple parts.
There are three bones that make up the knee: the tibia, patella and femur. A layer of cartilage is present on each end of the bones. Cartilage allows the bones to move easily against each other, absorbing the shock that comes from moving. Two pads of cartilage are present between the femur and tibia, reducing friction and shifting body weight throughout the knee joint. The cartilage between the femur and tibia are located inside the knee, and are known as the lateral meniscus and the medial meniscus. The bones are connected by a joint capsule, featuring an outer layer of connective tissue as well as an inner membrane, known as the synovium, which produces lubrication for the joint.
