The 2016 Summer Olympic Games are set to open in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on August 5, and the eyes of the world will be on the elite athletes competing for the gold. Physicians and staff of Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) are also Olympic enthusiasts, but remind local athletes that if they are inspired to try a new sport by the stunning performances of the Olympians, to play smartly.
Over the next few weeks, SOS will offer some sport-specific tips to staying healthy. Through a lighthearted survey of staff and SOS Facebook followers’ favorite summer Olympic sports, and the generally most popular Olympic sports, SOS will provide tips for playing these chosen games: Gymnastics, Swimming, Track & Field, and Soccer.
Poll results from our online survey:
In general, the members of the SOS Sports Medicine team recommend the following when trying any new activity in the summer:
FOR ALL ACTIVITY:
- Warm up properly by stretching. Stretching exercises can improve the muscles' ability to contract and perform, reducing the risk for injury.
- Know and abide by the rules of any sport, as rules are designed to help keep things safe.
- Cool down after any sport or exercise. Stretching and walking help your heart rate ease and muscles relax.
- Wear the appropriate equipment and protective gear for your sport. Protective pads, mouth guards, helmets, gloves and other equipment can be key in preventing injuries.
- Appropriate footwear should be worn, as shoe support may correct certain foot problems that can lead to injury.
- Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after play to keep your body hydrated.
FOR ALL OUTDOOR PLAY:
- Always inspect the playing field for uneven terrain (holes, divots), glass, and other debris.
- Assess weather conditions and be prepared to delay/cancel the game, especially in cases of particularly hot weather or thunderstorms with lightning.
- Wear sunscreen, a hat and light, protective clothing.
