Many patients can benefit from a short bout of therapy (1-3 visits) prior to having Orthopedic Surgery. The goals of pre-op therapy may include any (or all) of the following:
- Education on what to expect following Surgery (Treatment Protocol)
- Pre-scheduling of post-op therapy per the protocol
- Education on Donning/Doffing Post-op Brace, Sling, Splint or other required equipment
- Education on Post-operative Pain and Symptom Management
- Pre-op and/or post-op Home Exercise Instruction (HEP)
- Gait Training with/without an Assistive Device (i.e. crutched, walker, cane, etc.)
- Education concerning Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) that may be affected post-op
- Entering/Exiting a motor vehicle
- Entering/exiting the home
- Transfer Training (Chair, bed, toilet, etc.)
- Discussion of other Assistive Devices that may be useful post-op for ADLs
- Education regarding food preparation, eating, washing, dressing/undressing
- Education regarding Precautions/Contraindications following Surgery(What not to do)
- Answer any and all questions you (the patient) may have regarding life after surgery
