Elective Surgery at Specialists' One-Day Surgery Center During COVID-19

COVID-19 Policies and Procedures at Specialists' One-Day Surgery Center

Specialists One Day Surgery Center is taking a phased approach to resume elective procedures and to provide clinically necessary care to our patients. We want to make sure you do not postpone care that you need to get healthy and stay well.

We want you to know that safety is one of our core values and a top priority. Specialists' One-Day Surgery Center has the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), screening and testing in place to care for you.

We are here for you and committed to keeping you safe while you get the medical care you need. That's why:

  • All patients scheduled for elective procedures will be contacted by someone from the surgical facility to arrange a COVID-19 test that will be within 5 days of surgery.
  • If a patient tests positive, the procedure will be postponed until a negative result is obtained, unless urgent/emergent.
    • If a patients tests positive we will contact them directly, provide the NYS Department of Health with their results, and that the Department of Health will provide additional guidance on self-isolation and tracing.  Once a patient has tested positive for COVID-19, they cannot return for surgery until 21 days from the date of the positive test, they are asymptomatic, and have re-tested within the 5 day time frame and tested negative.
  • After testing we will only contact you if you have a Positive COVID-19 result.
  • At the time of a negative test result, the procedure will continue as planned at the Specialists One Day Surgery Center.
  • No patient will be billed for the cost of COVID-19 testing.

Stay Safe Prior to Your Surgery

In preparation for your upcoming procedure, we recommend you follow these instructions for the 14 days before your procedure:

  • Maintain current social distancing recommendations.
  • Follow other preventative measures such as wearing a cloth face covering in public when social distancing might not be possible.
  • Minimize trips away from home as much as possible.
  • Inform the healthcare provider of any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or a positive test result for COVID-19.

COVID-19 Testing

  • Someone from the surgical facility will be contacting you to arrange a COVID-19 test that will be within 5 days of surgery.
  • The drive-up test is conducted at our surgery center location, 5801 East Taft Road, Syracuse NY, 13212, in the parking lot COVID-19 designated testing site.
  • This test can have false negative results meaning that you may have COVID-19 infection without the test result showing infection. You could have been exposed recently and not yet test positive. You can become exposed after the test is obtained. Therefore, it is very important that you follow Self Quarantine prior to your procedure.

Self-Quarantine Prior to Your Procedure

To be as healthy as possible in advance of your planned surgical procedure, we expect that you increase the level of precautionary self-isolation from the time your test is obtained through the day of your procedure:

  • Stay at home; do not go out in public.
  • Do not allow visitors and limit the number of people in your home.
  • You should separate yourself from people in your home (sleep in a different room, use a separate bathroom) as much as possible and do not interact in the home with any household member who is ill.
  • If you are in contact with other people in your home, you both should wear masks.
  • Clean your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Monitor for signs and symptoms including fever, cough, and shortness of breath or trouble breathing. Other symptoms to watch for are chills, body ache, sore throat, headache, diarrhea, or nausea/vomiting.
    • Should symptoms appear prior to your procedure, please contact your physician’s office.

On the Day of Your Procedure

On your arrival to the designated drop off point, please enter the building through the center doorway labeled Specialists One Day Surgery.

Your driver will not be allowed inside the surgery center except for a parent/ guardian of a minor child or a medically necessary support person for an adult. When critical discussions are occurring with a SOS health care provider, patients are encouraged to call their driver and put the phone on speaker phone so they can listen and ask questions.

When you arrive, we will ask you on the day of procedure whether you have followed these precautions and we will perform a screening assessment to confirm that you are not experiencing symptoms of illness. If you have symptoms of illness, it is possible that your surgeon will have to postpone your procedure.

For designated drivers, we will call you when it is time to pick up the patient. Patient pick-up is at the Patient Discharge door, marked for this purpose to the right of the entry door. If you have a question about the patient while you are waiting you may call 315 498-6200.
